The Reverend Gary S. Herbst

Gary is the son of Lila Von Tress and the late Rev. Grant Herbst. After graduating from UT in Austin, he attended Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va. and graduated in 1976. He spent his early ministry in Texas as Associate Rector of The Church of the Epiphany in Houston and Vicar and Rector of Trinity Church in Jasper. He was rector of St. John’s in Ketchikan, Alaska from 1986-2002.

Renewal in the church has always been a part of Gary’s life. While in Texas, he attended Cursillo in 1979 and has served as Spiritual Director for a number of Cursillo weekends in Texas and Alaska. He has also attend a Happening Youth Cursillo weekend and served as spiritual director for later weekends. In Texas, Gary attended several Episcopal Renewal Ministries retreats.

While in Ketchikan, he sustain the only active Cursillo community in Alaska until it’s interdenominational status forced changing the community to the Walk to Emmaus where Gary helped lead Walks until moving in 2002.

In 1992-93 Gary attended and graduated from the Spiritual Directors School in the Pecos Benedictine Monastery in New Mexico.

Although always a strong preacher, Gary has felt a special calling for evangelism in the past 14 years. He introduced the first Episcopal Revivals at his church in 1992. These revivals featured Alaskan Bishop Steve and drew record crowds of community members as well as church members. Bishop Steve then sent Gary out to carry on that work of evangelism throughout Alaska, having him preach revivals in Minto above the Arctic Circle and in Anchorage. He also helped coordinated the Ketchikan Revival of Franklin Graham in 1995. Since arriving back in Texas 2002 he has introduced 5 annual community revivals to his new church with Bp. Steve as the guest preacher, Bp. Bill Fry, Col. (ret.), Canon Michael Green of Oxford, England and this year Dean Kevin Martin of St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Dallas.

Gary preaches from the heart with powerful conviction. He sprinkles his message with stories and humor that will move even the coldest listener to a new level and commitment to Jesus Christ.
